March 26th-March 30th

Religion –We continue to work through presenting our Google Slide Presentations on the 7 Sacraments.  We have wrapped up our unit on the Works of Mercy. We will test over these on Monday March 26. Mrs. Alsin’s class will test on Tuesday. March 27. Students will be responsible for knowing all of the Works of Mercy as well as how a 5th grader can serve others following the Works of Mercy to receive a 4 on the test.  To receive a 3, students simply need to know how a 5th grader can serve others following the Works of Mercy-the actual Works will be provided. We will observe Holy Week next week by going through the Stations of the Cross in detail. We will watch short videos about the Stations of the Cross and reflect on them in a journal.  Please feel free to view these videos at the following website. They are well done, meaningful and relevant to the students’ lives today. http://bustedhalo.com/video/virtual-stations-of-the-cross
Stations of the Cross will be held on Friday at 2:30 in the church.  Please feel free to join us. We will continue with The Beatitudes following our Holy Week and Easter unit.  Mrs. Anderson’s class will be leading the all school mass on Wednesday, March 28th. Students in her class may wear “dress up” clothes (think what one may wear on picture day).

Reading/Language Arts – Our MLK unit is complete!  If you are in the building, please take some time to walk through the 5th grade hallway.  The completed informative writing pieces and illustrations turned out beautifully. Mrs. Anderson’s class will begin the whole class book, Bridge to Terabithia next week.  Mrs. Alsin and Mrs. Schaffer’s class will be working in Literature Circles.

Math –  We spent time working on improper fractions, mixed numbers, and parts/whole.  Next week, we will continue to spend time converting fractions to decimals and percents.

Social Studies - Students have been working hard researching our wonderful state of Iowa.  We will continue researching next week and begin putting projects together.  Students were given 3 choices on how they wanted to present their information to the class.  A google slide presentation, a play, or a book. All work for this project is being completed here in school.

Language Arts – We are winding down our verb unit.  The final test will likely be at the end of next week or the beginning of the following week.  The date will be communicated ASAP. Next week we will also begin organizing information and begin drafting informative writing pieces.

Spelling –  Next week’s Spelling list will consist of words with the Greek and Latin Roots: poly, hexa, hepta, octa, multi, and deca.  We will also learn about Idioms.
