5th Grade Newsletter
May 7th-May 11th

Religion – We began our unit on Mary this week. We created an ABC chart of everything we already knew about Mary and continued to add to as we learned more about her. We then used these ABC charts to write an Acrostic Poem about Mary. We will add an illustration of Mary and hang these in the hallway to honor her throughout the month of May. We will spend reading about Mary in Scripture and also take some time to learn more about the Rosary.

Reading/Language Arts – Please take time to look over the packet from Mrs. Anderson’s class over the whole class book, Bridge to Terabithia, this needs to be signed by a parent and returned. Mrs. Alsin’s class will continue to share their “special needs” lit circle research projects. Mrs. Schaffer’s class finished the second round of Lit Circles and started the whole class book study using Bridge to Terabithia.

Math – We will be working on adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions. Please look for real-world opportunities to explore with your child at home.

Science - We started investigating living things this week, discussing the 5 kingdoms and the way in which scientists classify things into groups to make it easier to find and share information. We will continue with Daily Oral Geography skills so please encourage your child to continue to study their D.O.G. packet.

Language Arts – We spent time learning about conjunctions and prepositions, and interjections this week. The test over these 3 parts of speech will be on Tuesday May 8th. We also began our poetry/figurative language unit. Congratulations to Noah Gaul and Kate Carlson for winning 2nd and 3rd place in the Iowa Poetry Association Contest. Their poems will be published in Lyrical Iowa 2018.

Spelling – Spelling has been completed for the school year!
