May 15th-May 19th

Religion – We’ve continued and wrapped up our unit on Morality this week.  We used the Cardinal Virtues to guide this discussion.  We will be finishing the year discussing the importance of Mary in our church as well as the mysteries of the Rosary.  Students will be assessed in May on the Hail Holy Queen and The Apostles’ Creed.  Please continue to add these to your daily prayers at home.  We will be participating in praying one decade of the rosary each week in the month of May with the K-4th graders.  The next decade will be prayed on Monday May 15 at 8:45 in the church.  Please feel free to attend.

Reading/Language Arts –  We continue to complete mini lessons/activities for the comprehension strategies.  Mrs. Schaffer’s class will continue to work with the Special Needs Lit Circle Unit.  Students just finished reading a novel based on a character with a special need and have started researching a special need in groups.   The groups will present their findings to the class. Mrs. Anderson’s class started the whole class book Bridge to Terabithia.  Mrs. Alsin’s class will begin end-of-the-year student conferences for the 40 book reading program.

Math –  We started Unit 9 and will continue into next week.  This unit covers coordinates, area, volume, and capacity.  Bring on applying formulas like the good ‘ole days! :)

Science -We have been learning a great deal about how living things are categorized.  We broke each of those 5 kingdoms down even further and are learning specific characteristics for them.  We will review Monday and test over this information on Tuesday.

Language Arts – We continued to work on Persuasive Writing this week.  We looked at the pros and cons of fast food, juice, and chocolate milk.  We used our own schema to determine the pros and cons as well as articles and news videos.  Based on our research, we were able to develop thesis statements about each topic.  We also held a classroom debate!  We will continue with persuasion techniques and writing next week.  We will also begin working on Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections next week.

Spelling –  Our next Spelling list includes words that contain the Greek and Latin Roots biblio-, graph-, grad-, gress-.
