March 27-March 31

Religion –  We continue to re-visit our Lenten Theme-Moving Toward Jesus.  Each student filled out a Lenten Plan that will be reflected on weekly during Lent.  There will be a Lent Prayer Service on March 27 at 8:45.  Please feel free to attend.  We are continuing to work through our unit on the 10 Commandments.  This paired beautifully with the theme of Mrs. Anderson’s Class’ mass this past Wednesday.  As a reminder, Mrs. Schaffer’s class will be leading mass next week on the 29th.

Reading/Language Arts –  We continue to complete mini lessons/activities for the comprehension strategies.  Mrs. Schaffer’s Class and Mrs. Anderson’s Class have started a round of Lit Circles.  Mrs. Alsin’s Class has started the whole class book Bridge to Terabithia.

Math –  We are going to finish the unit focusing on Exponents, Expanded Form, and Order of Operations early next week.  Our next unit of study will be furthering our understanding of fractions and ratios.  We will continue to practice writing the homework assignment and concepts to study in the planner at the end of each class just like they will be expected next year.        

Science -We tested over the Circulatory System today and will be learning about the Respiratory System and the function of our lungs next week.  Our Test over the Lungs will be next Friday April 7th.

Language Arts – We’ve finished up our Figurative Language Unit with a quiz today.  We’ve also started and will continue working through a unit on Poetry over the next couple of weeks.  Students will learn Poetry Terms, different types of Poetry, how to study Poetry, and will try their skills at writing Poetry.  We will culminate this unit with a “Poetry Slam.”
 

Spelling –  Our next Spelling list includes words that have the oi or oy sound.

March 20-March 24

Reminder: Tuesday, March 21 is our Gala Pizza Party.  Please have your child bring a drink (no pop) and a side (veggie or fruit) to eat with their pizza.  Thank you!

Religion –  We continue to re-visit our Lenten Theme-Moving Toward Jesus.  Each student filled out a Lenten Plan that will be reflected on weekly during Lent.  There will be a Lent Prayer Service on March 20 at 2:45.  Please feel free to attend.  We have started a unit on the Ten Commandments.  We will take some time to discuss each commandment and then create a 10 Commandments booklet to share with and teach our 1st grade buddies about the 10 Commandments.  This unit will continue after Spring Break.

Reading/Language Arts –  We will continue to complete mini lessons/activities for the comprehension strategies.  Following Spring Break, we will also take some time to read in whole class novels or in Literature Circles.

Math –  We are going to start Unit 7: Exponents and Negative Numbers.  We will continue to practice writing the homework assignment and concepts to study in the planner at the end of each class just like they will be expected next year.        

Science -We have been discussing the Circulatory system this week.  Learning all about our blood vessels, what components make up our blood and the function of the heart.  Students took a quiz over the information they have thus far and will continue a more in depth study of the Heart when we return from Spring Break.

Language Arts – We will completed our “Writing on Demand” unit this week with a writing piece entitled, The Best Part of Me.  If you are in the building after break, stop down in the 5th grade hallway to see the completed pieces.  They turned out great!  The students self assessed their work using a rubric.  I will also give a score on the same rubric.  We will continue our figurative writing unit after break along with a Poetry Writing Unit.
 

Spelling –  Our next Spelling list includes words that have the Greek/Latin roots poly, multi, hexa, hepta, oct, and dec.

March 6-March 10

Religion –  Mrs. Schaffer and Mrs. Anderson’s classes wrapped up our unit on the Works of Mercy.  Mrs. Alsin’s class will take the unit assessment on Monday.  We also introduced our Lenten Theme-Moving Toward Jesus.  Each student filled out a Lenten Plan that will be reflected on weekly during Lent.  There will be a Lent Prayer Service on March 6 at 8:40.  Please feel free to attend.  We have started a unit on the Ten Commandments.  We will take some time to discuss each commandment and then create a 10 Commandments booklet to share with and teach our 1st grade buddies about the 10 Commandments.  This will serve as the final assessment for the unit.

Reading/Language Arts – We have moved back into our routine of independently reading, conferencing, and journal writing about current reading selections.  We are also completing mini lessons/activities for the comprehension strategies.  Following Spring Break, we will take some time to read in whole class novels or in Literature Circles.

Math –  Your child brought home their Unit 5 Oral and Slate for you to review and sign.  We have moved on to everything fractions!  We are practicing writing the homework assignment in the planner at the end of each class just like they will be expected next year.        

Science - We tested over our knowledge of Health this week and students were introduced to a few of the different body systems.  Next week we will focus on the Cardiovascular system followed by the Respiratory system.  We will test over this information when we return from spring break.

Language Arts – We will complete our “Writing on Demand” unit next week.  For the final assessment, the students will answer a writing prompt and then self assess their work using a rubric.  We have started a figurative writing unit with our focus being similes and metaphors this week.  We will move into other components next week.  We will also begin a short poetry unit.
 

Spelling –  Our Spelling list next week includes words that have the Greek/Latin roots trans, dict, duc, duct.
